Planning to return within 1 year
Medium- to long-term residents and others who hold a valid passport and Residence Card (zairyu card) can use the "Special Re-entry Permission" (minashi sainyukoku kyoka) if they meet the conditions.
You must return to Japan within 1 year from the date you leave.
However, if your current period of stay ends before 1 year has passed, you must return by the end of your period of stay.
When you leave Japan
If you use the Special Re-entry Permission, you must indicate your intention to re-enter and complete the necessary procedures when you leave.
This does not mean "since I plan to come back, I don't need to do anything."
Planning to leave Japan for more than 1 year
If you plan to leave Japan for more than 1 year, check the regular Re-entry Permit (sainyukoku kyoka).
The period you are permitted is within the range of your current period of stay.
If you leave without using a re-entry permit
If you leave Japan without using a Re-entry Permit or the Special Re-entry Permission, in principle your current residence status (zairyu shikaku) and period of stay are voided.
If you plan to return to Japan, be sure to check before you leave.
When your period of stay is approaching
Check whether your period of stay will end while you are on your temporary visit home.
If necessary, consult a Regional Immigration Services Bureau before you leave.
