What Is Tsukimi?

Tsukimi is a Japanese tradition of feeling the season by gazing at the autumn moon. People look up at the quiet night sky and enjoy the arrival of autumn.

How people enjoy it varies a little by region and household. You can take part just by looking at the moon, without any special preparation.

What Do People Do?

People spend time somewhere they can see the moon, and enjoy round tsukimi dango (rice dumplings) and other autumn foods. Some also decorate with pampas grass (susuki).

A Fun Thing to Know

Tsukimi doesn't fall on the same date every year. As autumn approaches, you may see moon- or rabbit-themed treats appear in shops.

Tsukimi events are sometimes announced at libraries or community facilities.

Bring something to wear outside at night

Autumn nights can get cold. If you're watching outdoors, it helps to have clothing you can adjust to stay warm.
